The Art of the Bicycle
2008 Bicycle Film Festival Exhibition, Melbourne
Opening at Don't Come Gallery in the Royal Arcade, Melbourne on Wednesday 19 November, 2008 as part of the Bicycle Film Festival 2008 program. This bicycle themed exhibition, which brings together works from a range of local and international artists runs until Sunday 30 November.
The Art of the Bicycle showcases and celebrates the many and various forms of creative activity surrounding the bicycle. Curated by Brad Haylock, lecturer in Visual Communication, Monash University and self-confessed bike aficionado, The Art of the Bicycle brings together new and existing works from a range of practitioners.
The works on show span painting, drawing, video art, sculpture and photography by a diverse and celebrated group of artists and designers including Colleen Ahern, Alter, Tristan Ceddia, Robert Cook, Alicia Frankovich in collaboration with Laresa Kosloff , Shaun Gladwell, Misa Glisovic, Brad Haylock, Alin Huma, Thomas Jeppe, Toby Neilan, Sidney Nolan, Pandarosa, Simon Pericich in collaboration with Nicki Wynnychuk, Mick Peel, Michelle Ussher and Andrew White.
The individual works come together in this exhibition to pay homage to the bicycle, extending its meaning far beyond its practical purpose.
“The Art of the Bicycle captures a diversity of perspectives of the bicycle,” said Haylock. “The artworks reveal the bicycle as a mode of transportation and as a means of liberation, as a sign of subcultural affiliation and as an object of desire. Traces of competitiveness, of personal histories and memories, and of the global systems of art and fashion are all at play.”
As with the Bicycle Film Festival film program, The Art of the Bicycle exhibition aims to unite audiences around the theme of the bicycle.
