What is an Insider? An Insider is to the body what memory is to consciousness: a kind of residue, something that is left behind. It is a core rather than a skeleton. It is a way of allowing things that are internal to the body - attitudes and emotions embedded in posture or hidden by gesture - to become revealed. They are equally alien and intimate. Antony Gormley's Inside Australia is a 51 statue installation on Lake Ballard, a 10 square kilometre dry salt lake in remote Western Australia. The sculptures were created during a six month process where the artist scanned the naked bodies of the people from the town of Menzies. The resulting 'Insider' sculptures address 'two notions of the interior - that which lies within the human being and that which lies at the interior of the continent'. |
