Frieze Art Fair 2005 Dale Frank’s actions in creating these painting are integral to their formal and conceptual resolution. These new paintings take layering, shattering and the infiltration of paint into paint to an allegorical extreme. The works are stunning in their flash-bulb veracity, mesmeric in their rich and marbled inner spaces. Considering Frank’s interest in the individual and their relationship to the immersive field of the universe, these painting suggest worlds that might be cosmic or quantum in scale. They are delirious and spectacular in their internal colour and form relations. One might appear as the traces of photographic emulsion amplified, another the visual recording of molecular process. Frank’s recent painting operate at levels that encompass representation and complex modes of abstraction. They appear animate for their pulsing sensation and rippling spatiality: their drama suggests that of travelling through time and space, where eruptions of light and cosmic matter are commonplace. They are indiscriminate in their enacting of biological life, moving beyond this to suggest the representation of a quantum sublime.
